When Your Mind Won’t Let You Rest

When Your Mind Won’t Let You Rest

Anxiety doesn't always look like fear. It can look like thinking through every possible outcome, replaying conversations, preparing excessively, needing reassurance, or feeling unable to relax because your mind is scanning for what could go wrong next.

How therapy can help

Our work begins by understanding your particular anxiety cycle. We may explore thoughts, physical sensations, avoidance, uncertainty, and the experiences that reinforce anxiety. Therapy may incorporate cognitive-behavioral strategies, acceptance-based approaches, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, mindfulness and grounding, distress-tolerance and emotion-regulation skills, exposure principles, and self-compassion.

The goal isn't to eliminate every anxious feeling. It is for anxiety to stop making your decisions for you.

Common questions

How do I know whether my anxiety needs therapy?

Anxiety may be worth addressing in therapy when worry, fear, avoidance, physical tension, or overthinking begins to interfere with sleep, work, school, relationships, decision-making, or your ability to enjoy daily life. You do not need to wait until anxiety feels severe to ask for support.

Can therapy help panic attacks?

Yes. Therapy can help you understand the panic cycle, reduce fear of the sensations themselves, practice grounding and regulation skills, and gradually change patterns of avoidance that can keep panic going.

What if I understand my anxiety but still cannot stop it?

Understanding a pattern intellectually does not always change the nervous-system, behavioral, or emotional responses that maintain it. Therapy can help you practice responding differently in real time, not just understand why the anxiety happens.
