Depression & Feeling Stuck
When Life Starts Feeling Smaller
When Life Starts Feeling Smaller
Depression does not always mean being unable to get out of bed. You may continue working, studying, parenting, socializing, and meeting responsibilities while feeling increasingly disconnected, exhausted, irritable, numb, or as if you are going through the motions.
How therapy can help
Therapy can help us understand what is contributing to depression rather than treating it as a personal failure. We may work on withdrawal and avoidance, harsh or hopeless thinking, emotion regulation, meaningful activity and relationships, and contributing grief, trauma, loneliness, chronic stress, or perfectionism.
Sometimes action comes first, and motivation begins to return afterward.
Common questions
Can depression look like high functioning?
Yes. Some people continue working, studying, parenting, or meeting responsibilities while feeling numb, exhausted, disconnected, hopeless, or unable to enjoy life. Outward functioning does not determine how much distress someone is carrying.
What if I have no motivation?
Low motivation is often part of depression rather than a character flaw. Therapy can help break tasks into smaller actions, reduce avoidance, rebuild routines and sources of reinforcement, and address the thoughts and emotions that make action feel difficult.
When should I seek more urgent help?
Seek urgent help if you are in immediate danger, are thinking about suicide or seriously harming yourself, or do not feel able to stay safe. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department; in the U.S., call or text 988 for crisis support.
