Why Do I Keep Ending Up Here?
Why Do I Keep Ending Up Here?
You may recognize the pattern and still have difficulty changing it—anxiety when someone feels distant, overanalyzing interactions, people-pleasing, taking responsibility for other people's emotions, difficulty trusting, or pulling away when closeness feels intense.
How therapy can help
Therapy provides an opportunity to understand these patterns without reducing you to an attachment label. We may explore triggers, fears of abandonment or rejection, boundaries, communication, self-worth, family-of-origin patterns, and how previous relationships or trauma influence present ones. DBT interpersonal-effectiveness and emotion-regulation skills may also be incorporated when they fit your goals.
The goal is to develop relationships in which connection does not require abandoning yourself.
Common questions
What is a healthy boundary?
A healthy boundary communicates what you are and are not willing or able to do while respecting both your needs and the other person's autonomy. Boundaries are not about controlling someone else; they clarify how you will participate in a relationship.
Why do I feel guilty when I say no?
Guilt can show up when saying no conflicts with long-standing beliefs about being helpful, avoiding disappointment, keeping peace, or earning closeness. Therapy can help you tell the difference between actual wrongdoing and the discomfort of changing an old relational pattern.
Can individual therapy help with relationship patterns?
Yes. Individual therapy can help you notice attachment patterns, communication habits, boundary difficulties, conflict responses, and the beliefs you bring into relationships. You can work on your part of the pattern even when another person is not in therapy.
