When the Next Step Isn’t Clear Anymore

When the Next Step Isn’t Clear Anymore

You may be starting or finishing graduate school, building a career, changing professions, navigating a relationship transition, adjusting to a new country or culture, reconsidering priorities, or realizing that achieving the goal you worked toward did not create the feeling you expected.

How therapy can help

Therapy can provide a place to separate what you want from what you have learned you are supposed to want. We may work with anxiety and uncertainty, values, perfectionism, boundaries, competing cultural or family expectations, and concrete next steps.

You don't need to know exactly where you're going before therapy begins. Sometimes the work is figuring that out.

Common questions

Why am I struggling with a change I wanted?

A wanted change can still involve uncertainty, loss, role changes, pressure, and adjustment. Excitement and grief, confidence and doubt, or relief and anxiety can exist at the same time.

Can therapy help me make a decision?

Yes. Therapy can help you clarify your values, identify fears and competing priorities, separate your preferences from outside pressure, and make a thoughtful decision. The therapist's role is not to choose for you but to help you understand what matters to you.

How do culture and family expectations fit into therapy?

They can be central. Decisions about school, career, relationships, independence, family roles, or identity often occur within cultural and family contexts. Therapy can make room for those influences without assuming that you should either follow or reject them.
